WHAT IS THE AVID PEER MENTOR PROGRAM? The purpose of the AVID Peer Mentor Program is to provide support for freshman and sophomore AVID students in their transition to AVID at the high school level. The AVID Peer Mentors will be all AVID juniors and seniors. Peer Mentors are matched with one to four student "mentees" referred to as their Little Brother or Little Sister. Junior mentors will be matched with freshmen and senior mentors will be matched with sophomores. The idea is to have the freshman and junior mentors and mentees to maintain their relationship for 2 years.
WHAT EXACTLY DO AVID PEER MENTORS DO?
AVID Peer Mentors maintain contact with their little AVID brothers and little AVID sisters throughout the year. Mentors will offer information, advice, and support around academic issues, extracurricular activities, social adjustment, and how to access resources for AVID. The nature of the contacts and relationships outside of the scheduled meeting times will vary depending on the needs of the mentees. Some mentors provide additional tutoring assistance, others interact around shared interests and activities, and some may talk during free periods or by phone, email, text or social media.
